An apple a day?
It may take a little more than an apple a day to keep the doctor away, but apparently there are enough politicians around to keep the medicos at bay. Former Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona never got to release his report on global health issues, or promote comprehensive sex education. Sadly, it will probably require a groundswell of cultural change to keep the anti-scientific out of office, and culture of that kind changes slowly.

I was reading that in the NY Times this morning. My first thought was to blog it, but then I just got too angry to do so. How pompous do you have to be to interfere with medical professionals who are trying to save people's lives?!? Of course, political tampering isn't brand new. Clinton did it, Bush senior did it, Regan did it.... W just seems more willing/eager to step on the toes of scientists.
It's easy to get angry at this sort of thing. Unfortunately, W & co. represent a viewpoint that is hostile toward science because they see it as a world-view competing with their own, ie; another religion. In some ways, I think it might actually be helpful to point out that science is really more a form of practice like Zen, than a religion. But that would require these same folks to understand the difference between the practice of Zen and regular religion. *sigh* This will require the patients of a Buddhist monk.
